FILM -- Final Girl

When I first heard about Tyler Shields' Final Girl I was super excited to check it out. Find out if I loved it or hated it!

Don't confuse this film with The Finals Girls directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, which will be released in October.

'Final Girl' is the name that was given to the heroine in slasher films of the 70s and 80s. The final girl is the one up against the killer at the end after after all of her sexually active friends meet their violent, bloody ends. Director Tyler Shields' title Final Girl is definitely an attention grabber.

The film stars Veronica, a girl orphaned after the death of her parents at a young age. As a kid she showed extraordinary memory and because of that an assassin named William decided to take her under his wing. Veronica was raised and trained by William. After 12 years of training Veronica is finally ready to take on the job meant for her. There's a group of four, well dressed 17 year old boys who lure blonde girls into the woods so they can hunt them down and murder them. Why? No clue! It was sadly never mentioned the reason why in the film. Veronica fits the profile therefore she is the guys next choice. However, these boys do not know that they will be the ones who are getting hunted!

Final Girl is the directorial debut of photographer Tyler Shields and he delivers us all a visually, beautiful film! Some may argue that this film is more of a solid thriller rather than a horror. Personally, I believe it's a thriller which doesn't mean that it's a bad thing, it simply means it's a thriller. This film may not be gory, however, it's still entertaining. There were beautiful shots of the woods at night, strong dialogue and strong performance from the actors. This film has a great balance between fashion and tone. I absolutely loved the vintage, fashionable costume designs and the setting. As the viewer we are taken back to the '50s/'60s yet it still feels modern.

One of my favorite scenes in the film seems like it's dedicated to all the horror fans because it involves a horror rule as well as a final girl rule. Veronica is on the verge of starting her mission and there's a possibility she may not come back, as a result she attempts to have sex with her trainer William. William declines and simply states that they cannot do it. How awesome is that? Original finals girls can only be virgins! Duh! My concerns with the film starts with the story line. I can't help but feel that story line could have been a whole lot stronger than what it was. I felt like it the story line came off predictable, however it's still enjoyable.

Overall, I really liked the film. Visually this film is spectacular, the music is amazing and the lighting is uniquely awesome! I recommend this film if you are interested in checking out Final Girl, if you want gore look elsewhere. Give this film a shot!
