Fellow Horror Fans...

This has been on my mind for a while and I wanted to put it out there. Something I really don't like is when some people say to me, "You don't look like you horror movies." Why, you ask? Because what does someone who likes horror movies look like? I was able to meet some cool people in the horror community and no one LOOKS the same. Are we all supposed to be dressed in black with black nail polish and black make up under our eyes?

I'm guessing some people say this to me because not only am I girl but I just so happen to be black. I guess as a black person in general, people think I'm supposed to only like Spike Lee and Tyler Perry movies. I'm a die hard horror fan; I watch horror movies like it's the news. It's something that I've always loved. An example, I have a rather large family, I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers, my Mother adores horror movies--that's where I get it from. ;) My Dad isn't much of horror fan, he'll watch it sometimes but not as much the rest of my family does.

Anyway, whenever my Mother would watch horror movies, rather if it was I Spit on Your Grave, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th or many others, my siblings and I would be gathered around watching. I know it sounds strange but I think we all came out fine in life.

When people find out that I like horror as much as I do, they automatically assume that there is something wrong with me. Speaking directly of myself, I was watching horror when I was in diapers and I think I came out perfectly normal. I graduated high school, went to prom, went to college, worked...sometimes even in daycares and I'm in a stable relationship. My parents have a healthy relationship, they have been married for about 35 years. I have a healthy, nothing out of the ordinary relationship with my parents, my siblings, my nephews...etc., I don't have an eating disorder, I don't abuse animals, I'm not on drugs, I'm sometimes socially awkward, but that's due to me being shy and being a computer geek. But above everything, I DON'T have the urge to kill people or whatever.

I do like other things besides horror movies, zombies and gore. I like anime, video games, graphic designing, romance movies, comedy movies, shopping...and a lot of other things. Maybe I only get this because of the kind of environment I'm in, it's not "normal" to like horror & what comes along with it but it is "normal" to want to look "fresh" or to be pregnant by age 11. In general, I guess I'm full of surprises because a lot of people wouldn't know that I like some of the things I like.

If anything, as strange as it sounds, I guess horror was my first love, it led me ultimately to what I want to do in life; make horror movies. If this is what makes me happy, I don't get why it would bother some people. I cannot help that I love horror. I'm drawn to it and I'm not going to apologize for that. Some of the COOLEST people love horror...believe me, I'd know. ;)

My questions to YOU:

Do people ever say that to you, "You don't look like you like horror movies"?

What's something that people would be surprised to know about you that you like?

FILM -- Mother's Day

This is the remake of the 1980 version that was released by Troma. This 2011 version was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Scott Milam. The release date is unknown but I just saw it this week, so it was probably released June 2011. Anyway, the film is about three brothers who try to run from the law by heading back home. Unfortunately once they get to their home, they discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Their Mother is a powerful woman who helps her sons escape and also teaches the new home owners and their guest discipline over time.

This movie, to me, was so intense--though I read up on some other reviews and people didn't think it was. Hm...I'm completely baffled as to why they felt that way. It was horror but there was action and so much violence and gore as well! The movie explodes after a couple and their guest get invaded. That's when it all completely shifts into a film with a lot surprises, surprises that I won't spoil for you! Although it's a remake, the director and writer did a great job keeping the original core ideas and the dementedness on the family values.

I love how the film has that whole view on what would you do to survive as a hostage and how the Mother gives discipline, punishment & pleasure. Of course in movies like this, there are many power struggles among other surprised but it was nonstop entertaining. Also, the film has a great storyline, in my opinion--a story line with a lot of layers to it.

One thing, I did dislike was how there is that character that is weak in the beginning but finds strength...blah, blah, blah--same ol' same. I overlooked that character. Anyhow, great movie to check out! I say, this is the kinda movie you can watch alone, on a date, with groups--it doesn't matter!

FILM -- Bloody Birthday 1981

This is a RARE, classic slasher from the 80s that was directed by Ed Hunt and released sometime in 1981. I've been searching for this movie since I knew that there were disturbing, emotionally detached children in it who go around killing people. The film begins with three babies being born in the same hospital at the same time with separate parents at the peak of a full solar eclipse. Ten years later, these innocent looking kids begin their own killing spree just before their birthday bash. No one is safe; these kids go for anybody.

It's known that when children are born, they have a clean slate, meaning they don't know right from wrong. When I was taking early childhood classes, one of the few things I remember from class was a famous developmental psychologist named Jean Piaget who believed that children followed the morality of mainly their family before they hit 10 years old. Once a child hits 10 years old, they develop their own conscience and begin forming their own opinions and making their own decisions. With that being said, in this film, since all three of the children were born during the eclipse, they don't have that luxury where they know what's right from wrong. Therefore, these three kids go on a killing spree.

I really enjoyed this movie & it's so rare to come across slashers like these. I recommend this to all, definitely a good watch!

FILM -- Stake Land

I watched this movie earlier today and was in awe with the atmosphere of the whole film. It's filled with vampires, cannibals and unbalanced humans. To me, this film has raised the bar for vampire/apocalypse films. This film was directed by Jim Mickle and was just released April 22, 2011.

The director Jim Mickle also directed Mulberry Street and I heard that this is a follow to the cult hit. The cast includes Connor Paolo (He's Eric from Gossip Girl), Nick Damici (Who helped write this film), Danielle Harris (She played Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4&5 ALSO she still look great) and some other recognizable people.

Anyway!! This awesome film is about a teenage boy named Martin and just before the country collapses in an empty pit of political and economic disaster, a vampire epidemic sweeps across whatever is left of the country. The nation is now filled with abandoned towns and cities. Now, it's up to a sly, unnamed vampire hunter to get Martin safely up north to Canada, the continent's "New Eden". I was so impressed with this film.

This film is similar to Zombieland but more serious & kinda similar to The Road but less depression & more horror. I recommend this to EVERYONE, even if you don't like horror. It's an never ending adventure. It has a great cast and awesome music, which surprised everyone being that it's a low budget film. The ONLY thing about this movie that I don't care for is the ending. :| It is semi-disappointing to me, but may not be for you!

Top 10 Underrated Horror Villains

I decided to do this post on the villains that people forget about. So, I just want to recognize these villains for their greatness! These are MY top 10 underrated villains, I'd love to know everyone elses. You can just comment to let me know or post one of your own & I'll definitely check it out!

WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

10. Jacob Goodnight -- See No Evil (2006)

Although he's a Momma's boy, he shoves a cellphone down a girl's throat!

9. Big Ben -- House (1986)

How can you not think he's cool? For those of you who watched House, you know that Big Ben wasn't always like this. (Sorry! That's the best looking picture I could find of him!)

8. Esther -- Orphan (2009)

I was surprised in an AWESOME way by this movie, and by Esther. Just a simple way to put it: Esther was creepy.

7. Mr. Simms -- Tales From the Hood (1995)

I know a lot of people didn't like this movie for various reasons, but I liked it a lot, mainly because of Mr. Simms. I thought he was VERY creepy! When I first saw it, he always freaked me out. "This ain't not funeral home!" One of the FREAKIEST quotes of the movie.

6. Pumpkinhead -- Pumpkinhead (1988)

Clearly...take a look at this creature. Enough said.

5. John Ryder -- The Hitcher (1986)

Just a word of advice, always look at your fries before you eat them.

4. Dad Meiks -- Frailty (2002)

A religious fanatic, (Dad Meiks) visions lead to a series of murders to destroy supposed demons. One of the BEST psychological horrors ever made because of this character. Well done, Bill Paxton!

3. Phantasm -- The Tall Man (1977)

He was cool because of his flying spheres/sentinels that had weapons inside like drills, lasers, saws & etc. Plus, he had awesome power; telekinesis!

2. Gage -- Pet Semetary (1989)

I don't have any children so I can only imagine how horrible it was for his parents in this film. But take a look at his face! Even though he was evil and wanted to kill...he was so cute!

1. Angela -- Night of Demons (1988)

Imagine going to a party and almost everyone there turns into demons. She was just awesome. I don't know if I was mesmerized by her dance or if it was the way she ripped out this guy's tongue and spit it out on the floor like it was nothing.

Film Review #7: Troll 2

Don't the goblins remind you of paper bags?? Maybe it's just me!

This cheesy galore of fun was directed by Claudino Fragasso and released October 3rd, 1990. It was so bad that it was good--if that makes sense? x_x! I do prefer Troll over Troll 2 but I love my cheese. Lastly, just a caution, there are NO trolls in this movie...only goblins!

So, I hope you enjoy my review. I hope you don't forget to subscribe, comment & rate! Thanks! :)

FILM -- Rabid Grannies 1988

This is a Belgian film that was dubbed in English and distributed by the awesome Troma. It was directed by Emmanuel Kervyn and released sometime in 1988. In this film, a large family gathers to the countryside to celebrate their two grandmothers' birthdays. One of the gifts the grandmothers' receive is from their devil worshipping nephew. Once the gift is open, the two lovable grandmothers turn into vicious, flesh eating demons.

Ummm....is it cheesy? Yes. The acting/dialogue is awful, but the gore is delightful. It's a fun little horror comedy that revolves around demon possession, though I can see why a lot of people never heard of it or were unwilling to give it a try. You can give it a try if you want, it's on Netflix!

FILM: The Prowler -- 1981

The Prowler, also known as Rosemary's Killer, was released November 1st, 1981 and directed by Joseph Zito. So, it starts off in 1945, in a small town called Avalon Bay where a graduation dance has been brutally interrupted with a murder of Rosemary Chatham and her boo. Thirty-five years later, the same tradition of the graduation dance is still supposed to take place, but there is some unknown, masked person in a US army outfit. Bottom line, he's ready to kill again.

Well! I heard of this movie, nothing in particular...just heard the title before. I never watched it before last night and it was just completely random how I came across it. I was going to review another film but I thought, "Why not with this one?" I have a thing for 80's slashers as I said previously.

If you like...once again, the classic horror of the 80's, then you'll love this film. The story line is pretty cool, but to me, it was like it was kinda missing something. Maybe that's just me though....It does drag out and get slow, but I thought the tension and gore effects made up for it. And one more thing, I thought they could have picked a better look for the killer. It wasn't really scary...just more of--what is that?? Yet, it is still an entertaining watch; however, you don't have to see it if you haven't seen it yet.

Film Review #5: Scream

***I HAD TO REDIT VIDEO!!!***

Directed by Wes Craven. Scream was released on December 20th, 1996. In my opinion, Scream spiced up the horror game in the 90s and brought it back to life. Ultimately, it broadened the horror film audience! I hope you guys enjoy my video review! Please don't forget to subscribe, comment & rate! Thanks. :)
